'Psych'ed Out

Alright Psych, lets you and me have a little talk, shall we?

I've been with you from the beginning and things have been fine. You're funny, charming, good company, and chock full of 80's references I don't always get, not that there's anything wrong with that. But lately it just seems like you are either trying too hard, or not hard enough. Resting on your laurels if you will.

Take the season premier this year, Romeo and Juliet and Juliet. A little light on the case plot line, which I can understand, had to catch up on the loose ends of last season, but it was more than light, it was weak. The plot didn't make a whole lot of sense and no one in the cast even really seemed to care for it. The only quasi redeeming thing about the episode was Shawn's humorous blatant lack of knowledge about anything Asian, which on kinda bordered on funny racism.

Now I found the Freddie Prinze Jr ep. (Not Even Close .....Encounters) funny, but I'm not sure if it was legit funny or if was the fact that it was FPJ reading the lines. Gus signing an autograph as Lavar Buton was legit funny.

The latest episodes of the season have picked up somewhat, in particular Feet Don't Kill Me Now and Shawn and Gus in Drag (Racing). I liked the switching up of the partners in Feet, allowing Gus (Dule Hill) and Lassiter (Tim Omundson) to play off of each other nicely. And their interaction at the end of Racing over what Gus actually brings to the table (his head, the super sniffer, and a positive working attitude) was a nice addition to their growing relationship.

I think what concerns me most is the character direction of Lassiter. I feel that he is heading very much into a season 5 charaicture character. The whole issue of him and what he does to his neighbors squirrels is just too much. There was a great scene last season between him and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) where they had a great bit of dialogue that did nothing but referenced Grease. I found it very funny, but somewhat out of place for the Lassiter character. I'm seeing that angle of 'funny but just doesn't fit' show up more and more in this character this season.

Anyway, Psych, I'm willing to stick with you. Let's just pull it together, I know you can do it.

Love,
Lauren
